Dear UE Colleagues,

I hope you are having a great week. I’m writing to communicate some updates across UE.

  * Effective July 1, 2024, CUREL, which currently falls under the portfolio of the Associate Dean and Faculty Director of University Honors, will join the VPDUE’s portfolio. The timing of this change is particularly beneficial—we will welcome a new leader of Honors in the next few months, CUREL is in close proximity to the VPDUE which allows for more synergistic collaboration, and the VPDUE’s office move from Hinderaker to the SSB allows us to optimize programming across all CUREL programs. We look forward to this new direction and anticipate some exciting directions as we look to the future.
  * The 2024 Undergraduate Research Conference will be held from May 6 – 10, 2024. CUREL has received 336 abstracts this year – a 26% increase over last year!
  * The VPDUE, Bob Ream, Jose Aguilar from Admissions, participated in a case study on serving low-income students across UCR. This was led by the Chronicle of Higher Education and Ascendium. This was followed up with a nationwide webinar which reached 1500 people. Feel free to view the webinar recording<https://chronicle.zoom.us/rec/play/t62eGNTfKveEWRUJcrCE_RoqRuYKUkwVjcJm5BlC0GZiIXNQH0DXeiR0VwLmGxaTDGrpexjU2ciXF8Jp.uxQF4RqtelMQxRCB?canPlayFromShare=true&from=share_recording_detail&startTime=1709233188000&componentName=rec-play&originRequestUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fchronicle.zoom.us%2Frec%2Fshare%2FgtvfgZtyhwB2xZ9QQ0_5TnB6ZcrvJv2z6L1VYlkffMybTJhGvujGiiEYkHgFMij5.3DWC-fuh4UAYgUNB%3FstartTime%3D1709233188000%26mkt_tok%3DOTMxLUVLQS0yMTgAAAGRmeXRM1An1MzFJ9cgASUOnT7hXQVt9moOsmq9JDrcGrPw_IPYn43P2RIE5-PBHJCCC-_RMVyXhLwN9TN3sP5n2pMV-21jQvPNSWeybk9F8IhZPYo> or read the attached case study.
  * University Honors will be hosting the first ever Honors Transfer Council of California Research Conference on Saturday April 20, 2024. Approximately 300 community college transfer students are expected to attend.
  * The 2023-2024 Sankofa Mentorship Program has recruited over 60 first-year freshmen and first-year transfers to join the program – slightly over a 100% increase from last year’s program.
  * The ARC hosted its first Successful Student Conference (Jan. 20), which included dynamic student panel discussions and a campus resource fair. The comments of one participant echo the enthusiasm shared by many: Everything was great! Thank you so, so, so much!
  * Since the start of the 2023-2024 academic year, HPAC advising staff have identified new areas of collaboration with faculty, academic advisors, and student organizations to increase student involvement at workshops and events. Earlier this week, HPAC held a successful open house as well.
  * All first-year Kessler scholars are actively engaging in community service projects whether with the City of Riverside, Highlander Day of Service, or Highlander Day. Many students are also actively applying for additional scholarships and summer internships.
  * UE, in collaboration with campus partners, will host a Communications Workshops in the Career Center on March 6 to assist first-gen students with communication styles and confidence building for interviews.
  * UE and the SAMs will host the second annual “Advising Town Hall” gathering on Monday, April 22, 2024. Approximately 75 academic advising professionals are expected to attend.
  * The XCITE team just completed its RIDLE 2023 Faculty Learning Communities, where 60 faculty members spent eight months working on new instructional designs for bottleneck courses at UCR, and the faculty worked closely with our Engaged Teaching Team, our Teaching and Learning Initiatives group, XCITE Studios, and IDEA Lab.
  * XCITE welcomed Dr. Lauren Levitt to the team, as a Postdoctoral Fellow on a $994,000 NSF Grant (PIs: Richard Edwards, Annie Ditta) focused on evaluating classroom observation protocols.
  * Genesis Gonzalez, UE’s new Storyteller/Marketing Manager started her new role on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. She is working with the VPDUE on a workflow strategy and will soon be reaching out to all of the UE areas for a meet and greet.
  * The UWP welcomed Toni Van Buhler to the staff as an Administrative Assistant. They are working with XCITE and other campus partners to facilitate an online administration of the Analytical Writing Placement Exam, which will streamline placement.

Please continue to share any and all news as it pertains to UE. Genesis will lead our internal communications moving forward.

Best,

Louie
