Dear UE Colleagues,
At our September 2023 retreat, there was significant emphasis on the importance of identifying and using data to inform our work across UE, something that many of us already did and continue to do to inform our work. Then, in January 2024, I rolled out the attached data informed goal setting plan with the UE Senior Leadership and VPDUE Cabinet. Since January, I have heard from several areas that people are making progress.
With this in mind, we would like to dedicate time at the September 2024 UE Retreat to highlight the work across the org. We will be using a lightning round format and voluntary presenters from UE (UE staff) will speak for 5-7 minutes (+2 minutes max. to allow for questions, 10 minutes total). Think of this like a TED-talk style format.
This is an opportunity for UE staff to share advances in their work. We are specifically looking for impact data in your respective areas. The data can focus on the impact of a particular program, an initiative, a new practice, or some pilot results. The data can be preliminary and does not need to be perfect. Presenters can discuss how their findings connect to one or more of UE's 5 strategic goals<https://strategicplan.ucr.edu/undergraduate-education>. Again, presentations are completely voluntary. There could be a scenario where more than one program in a particular area shares their work (i.e., XCITE shares about RIDLE and another XCITE presenter shares about a technology innovation with faculty). Presenters are strongly encouraged to practice their presentations in advance and adhere to the time parameters. Below are some more specific guidelines to help people assemble their presentations. TED Talk provides speaker guides, which we provide below and adapted for our purposes (thanks, Richard Edwards!):
1. Select which UE strategic plan goals best aligns with your data
2. Explain the connection between your data and the strategic plan goal (i.e. why does this data demonstrate impact or advancement of the goal or contributions to the goal, etc)
3. Describe your evidence and how and why it matters
4. Share whether the activities that generated the data will continue or grow in the future, or if the effort behind the data is already completed
5. Rather than open with a string of stats, provide the audience with context for your data
6. Discuss any challenges you may have in interpreting the data, or obtaining the data, or in analyzing the impact of the data
Presentations (i.e., slides) should be submitted by Tuesday, September 3, 2024, by 5 p.m. and submitted to Israel in XCITE at: Israel.Fletes at ucr.edu<mailto:Israel.Fletes at ucr.edu> and copy Mona at: mona.nelson at ucr.edu<mailto:mona.nelson at ucr.edu>
Please use the google document<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fsr_lUD70W3sYilNtPXu58NxGx_pOCcBVAcIyyJ3WG4/edit> to sign up for a time. There are approximately 9 presentation slots during the 2-hour window on September 11, 2024, between 9:30-11:30 am. Again, presentations are optional and voluntary.
I'm looking forward to our inaugural UE Data Impact Mini-Summit as part of the 2024 UE Retreat in September and continue the conversation we started at last year's retreat and the conversations we have been having all year about the importance of data-informed goal setting.
Thank you,
Louie
