Happy New Year Transfer Highlanders!

Happy start of the Winter 2023 quarter! Transfer advocates across campus are excited to kick off the new year with some exciting events. Take a look at the flyers in this newsletter and attend any and all events that you are interested in attending.  We cannot wait to meet you!

Transfer Reminders and Tips on Navigating the Resources at UCR!

1. Each department, unit, program, and college will have its own events, activities, and communication with and for you. For instance, the units in Costo Hall offer a plethora of peer mentoring, free printing, access to a textbook library, testing supplies, etc.
2. As transfer students, your colleges have transfer student support programs such as: CHASS Transfers First, BCOE Transfer Transition Program, and CNAS STEM Connections. Be sure to connect with your academic advisor for your unique college program.
3. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) also offers a transfer support program, be sure to connect with the Transfer Success Program for more opportunities to enhance your academic experience and prepare you for graduate programs!
4. Student programing such as; concerts, special guests, orientation, fraternities and sororities, and tradition keepers are all offered through Student Life, be sure to connect with their team!

These are just a few examples of opportunities to connect with campus and enhance your student experience. You will now receive monthly updates with information relevant to your transfer student experience in addition to your own colleges.

Jadeyn Speaks transferred to UCR from Victor Valley College as a Biology major in Fall 2021. We asked Jadeyn a few questions about her transition, here are her responses:

What words of wisdom would you like to share with your transfer peers?
Never get discouraged. Being a transfer in a UC can be scary, and you might feel like you are behind, but you are not. You will do amazing here. You got this.

LaSharon McLean Perez
Assistant Director, Education Abroad

LaSharon McLean Perez is a double alumna from UC Riverside as a transfer student. She received her BA in Theater in 2004 and received her MFA in 2010. We asked LaSharon to share about her transfer student experience as well as some words of wisdom to our transfer community. Here is her response:

Transferring to UCR really opened up my world. It’s sounds ironic given my time in the Navy. As an older student, also a single mother, it was a bit of an adjustment trying to fit into campus life. I had to really go out of my way to find what interested me. I wish the VRC existed back then but it didn’t so I had to find a resource that would be my connection to all the things that the campus had to offer. My “safe haven” was the Asian Pacific Student Programs. I don’t have an Asian background, but it was the one office who welcomed me with open arms. It is also the place where I found on of my campus mentors. Joe Virata, who went from being the Director of APSP to the Assistant Dean of Students, played a vital role in what shaped my life at UCR. The other person who made an impact was the Diane Elton, the Director of the International Education Center. Diane and Joe were the 2 people who I used as a sounding board for how and what I wanted to get involved with on campus.  Mentorship is critical.
If I can relay any piece of information to a student who is transferring….find you a mentor. You have such short time adjusting to campus that is seem very challenging.  Having Diane and Joe serve as my mentors allowed be to take the guess work about what I wanted to achieve in my two years at UCR. Also, they connected me to resources across campus which saved me time in trying to figure it out on my own. Now I work here at UCR and I hope that students feel that they can come to me when they need help or advice. Even if you are not coming to see me about international opportunities, I want them to know I am here for them no matter what they need.

Tuesdays at 5:00pm - 6:00pm in HUB 355
The Tuesday Talk supportive LGBTQ+ discussioneries launches on National Coming Out Day with the theme of :Coming Out Stories" (and some free refreshments). Share a slice of your  story or simply listen to others.
