Dear all,

Rory Fewer and I would like to invite you all to the arts festival "Fold,
Spindle, Mutilate" we have organized as part of our "Defying Defaults in
Technology and Culture" UCHRI Multicampus Research Working Group. For more
information and to register for this free event (refreshments provided!)
this Saturday afternoon at UCR ARTS (3834 Main Street, Riverside, CA 92501
<https://maps.app.goo.gl/CbxZes8XuyrVBa3x5>), please visit
https://ucrarts.ucr.edu/events/fold-spindle-mutilate/. We have attached the
program and flyer below; feel free to share these with anyone who might be
interested!

FOLD, SPINDLE, MUTILATE is a free arts festival inspired by the
technologies and systems we often overlook—which can have grave
consequences. Inspired by the warning “Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate”
written on punch cards for cashiers, data processing, the postal system,
and more, the festival’s group of artists interprets these instructions
across speculative poetry, a sound installation created with field
recordings from the dune ecosystem of the Russian-Lithuanian border, a film
screening about the 9th-century abbess/composer Kassia of Byzantium, a
video projection of the durational performance *after-lived*, and an
audiovisual installation/performance—each challenging the biases that loom
large in institutions and state power.

   - 12:00pm-1:00pm Arrival, refreshments, installation visits
   - 1:00pm-2:00pm Beyond the Frame: Erasure, Photography, and Speculative
   Poetry workshop (Wenxin Tang, UCR)
   - 2:00pm-2:45pm Radiant Center sound installation (Hanz Kuzmich, UCSC)
   - 2:45pm-3:15pm Experimental film installation (Laila Shereen Sakr, UCSB)
   - 3:15pm-3:55pm Video projection of durational performance after-lived
   (Lynne Marsh, UCR)
   - 3:55pm-4:40pm KASSIA SOUND ICON film screening (Noah Amir Arjomand and
   Brett Umlauf, UCR)
   - 4:40pm-5:00pm Closing remarks

Please feel free to join us at any point in the day your schedule allows!

This event is sponsored by the University of California Humanities Research
Institute, UCR Center for Ideas & Society, and UCR ARTS, and is
co-organized by Rory Fewer and Amy Skjerseth, with a great deal of
visioning by Judith Rodenbeck and Susan Laxton.

All my best,
Amy
