*More information about each event: *
*1/14: Javanese Gamelan Ensemble presents: KECAK workshop (Joko Sutrisno)*KECAK
(pronounced: "KEH-chak"), a form of Balinese music drama, originated in
the 1930s. Also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, the piece, performed by
a large group of chanting people percussively chanting "chak," and throwing
up their arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana where monkeys help Prince
Rama fight the evil King Ravana. Kecak is high-energy; its interlocking
vocal patterns, ranging from primordial animal gutturals to ethereal
melodies of exquisite beauty and sophistication, have inspired some of
Bali's most innovative contemporary choreography. To hear a preview of what
Kecak sounds like, visit https://youtu.be/gjd78XHZazY?si=4qpRdJ-YIio5yuiD

*1/21 Ana Benavides Plays Spanish Piano Classics*Award-winning pianist Ana
Benavides has recorded and published unknown piano works mainly from
19th-century Spain. She is Associate Professor at the Universidad Carlos
III de Madrid and a Distinguished Professor at the Real Conservatorio
Superior de Música de Madrid (Spain). During this concert, she will perform
several works for piano, including Música para un bailete by Joaquín Nin
Castellanos (1879–1949); Dr. Benavides discovered this manuscript in UCR
Library’s Special Collections–join us for this special world premiere!

*1/28 - " Decolonizing the Art Song: Latin America’s Voices, Identities,
and Soundscapes" - Lecture by Dr. Patricia Caicedo*How can song challenge
colonial legacies and reclaim cultural identity? In this eye-opening
lecture, Dr. Patricia Caicedo explores the Latin American art song as a
site of resistance, identity, and transformation. Bridging musicology,
performance, and decolonial theory, she reveals how composers and
performers shaped national sounds while confronting Eurocentric norms. Join
us for a compelling journey through marginalized soundscapes—and discover
why it's time to listen differently.

*2/4 “Beats, Circuits, and Beyond,” A Solo Set by Jesse Justice, LA
Musician*Los Angeles–based musician Jesse Justice brings his modular synth
setup to the Florence Bayz Music Series for an afternoon of experimental
sound and improvisation. Justice first made his name in LA as a beatmaker
before turning toward the Rhodes piano and composing in various jazz
styles. As a member of the electronic jazz trio Human Error Club and the
collectives Preference Records and The Village, he has co-produced projects
spanning neo-soul, hip hop, and exploratory jazz. His current solo practice
focuses on the textures of modular synthesis, using an amalgamation of
prepared and improvised techniques. In this performance, Justice invites
listeners into a sonic landscape where circuitry, improvisation, and
collective histories of experimental sound converge.

*2/11 Valentine’s Day with the Chamber Singers (Ruth Charloff)*Chamber
Singers presents selections from our popular annual tribute to Valentine's
Day -- songs of love, yearning, happiness and heartbreak. Features solo
performances, the full choir, pianist Jonathan Keplinger and conductor Ruth
Charloff, with pop, jazz, Broadway and far beyond.

*2/18 "Electroacoustic Music Strategies: Composing with Technology" with
Dr. Jorge Rodrigo Sigal Sefchovich*
In this talk, Dr. Rodrigo Sigal presents a range of creative and technical
strategies for composing electroacoustic music, with a focus on mixed and
acousmatic formats. Drawing on his experience as director of CMMAS (Mexican
Center for Music and Sound Art), he will demonstrate methods for shaping
timbre, structuring processes, and articulating sound in space. Through
musical examples and visual tools, the presentation will explore how
technology becomes an integral partner in the compositional act.

*2/25 “New Music for Two Voices,” Soprano Susan Narucki and Coloratura
Soprano Kirsten Ashley Wiest*GRAMMY-winning soprano Susan Narucki and
award-winning coloratura soprano Kirsten Ashley Wiest perform music written
for two voices from the contemporary classical repertoire.

*3/4 Student Performance and Composition Concert (Jonathan Keplinger)*UC
Riverside’s own music students present a diverse program of individual and
small ensemble performances. Works presented include newly composed music
and pop selections, as well as songs, arias, and instrumental pieces from
the classical, jazz, and musical theater traditions.

*3/11 Maryam Farshadfar, A Piano Journey Along the Caucasus*A Piano Journey
Along the Caucasus is a lecture-recital by Dr. Maryam Farshadfar, featuring
piano works from Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, and Iran. The
program explores how traditional melodies and cultural heritage shape
classical piano music across the region.

Again, please spread the word to your networks about these events, and I'll
send day-before reminders to you all as usual!

All my best for a great quarter,
