Hello, all!
The UCR Department of Music has the exciting opportunity to attend a *free
dress rehearsal of Akhnaten
<https://www.laopera.org/performances/2026/akhnaten?tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=23464011036&tw_kwdid=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23473686907&gbraid=0AAAAAD-z01-JpL-1NYEULXlejIpMyD7DK&gclid=CjwKCAiAwNDMBhBfEiwAd7ti1BR9zjF9zdugLZM77ssNRv-qUuNPX-kwyapzP2ny-ScGMR5e7aFzYhoClT8QAvD_BwE>
(an opera by Philip Glass) next Thursday, February 26 at the LA Opera*. The
event includes free roundtrip transportation to and from the LA Opera; the
bus will depart UCR at 5:30 p.m. and return to campus at approximately
11:30 p.m. The event will begin at the LA Opera at 7:30 p.m.
If you would like to register for a free ticket (and bus transportation, if
desired), please fill out an attached liability waiver (either pdf or Word
Doc, your choice) and upload it to this Google Drive folder
<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14p2yYH93xF5x6zqv_GcnGUwh3iOe0Buv?usp=sharing>
(or email it directly to me, if you prefer) *by next Tuesday, February 24,
2026, at 5:00 p.m.* The rehearsal is open to students, staff, and faculty;
the first 50 people to submit their forms will be guaranteed tickets, and I
will maintain a waitlist after that time.
A dress rehearsal is the final run-through of an opera production before
opening night. We will get to see not only the full show, but also
likely some of the production/rehearsal process itself at
intermission. Attending this rehearsal is a great opportunity if you’re
interested in any aspect of collaborative processes in the arts, theater,
arts administration, and the inner workings of one of LA’s largest arts
organizations--even if you don't particularly like opera (and it's more
than okay if you don't)! For those who were able to join one of the other
LA Opera rehearsals, know that this should be a similarly enjoyable and
engaging experience.
Please note this statement from the LA Opera about this production of
*Akhnaten*: "As a reminder, during the first 15 minutes of the opera, the
coronation scene includes approximately five minutes of frontal nudity
onstage, representing purification and rebirth. We understand this may not
be suitable for all audiences."
If you have any questions, please email me at danak at ucr.edu. I look forward
to seeing you there!
Best,
Prof. Kauf.
