*In this event, Quechua rapper and singer-songwriter Renata Flores, also
known as “The Queen of Quechua Rap,” will perform some of her songs and
talk about her career, as well as how she expresses social and political
concerns through her music and aesthetics. She is well known for sonically
inhabiting the in-betweenness of traditional Andean soundscapes and global
pop genres such as hip-hop, trap, cumbia, and reggaeton.*
*Biography:*Born in the Andean city of Huamanga, Ayacucho (2001), Renata
Flores grew up listening to rock and roll, soul, hip-hop, and reggaeton,
among other global pop genres, while also being deeply influenced by
traditional Andean genres such as huaynos, harawis, and danza de tijeras.
>From the beginning of her professional career—singing covers of artists
like Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys—she has blended these diverse sounds
to create a style of her own. Renata has crafted a soundscape that reflects
her diversity as an Ayacuchana singer from the Andes, one that speaks to
the modern world through the ancestral indigenous language of Quechua.
