Hi Logarithms,

Tomorrow's meetup will be led by Jed Kistner-Morris (a recent UCR Physics
PhD graduate), who will discuss his work experimenting with planting memes
on Twitter (more details below).

As usual, we will meet at 2 pm in Bourns A171 or on Zoom
<https://ucr.zoom.us/j/94346366729?pwd=dWkwSVdwcTFoVGlPdnhTdHlpRnV1Zz09>.

Cheers,
Emiliano

I'll be talking about an ongoing project I have that attempts to
> characterize the flow of information through networks by tracking internet
> memes. Internet memes are a fantastic vehicle for tracking information
> dissemination as they can be rapidly categorized by simple machine learning
> algorithms and fundamentally require some form of transmission to spread
> (e.g. there is a well defined and singular point of origin). I also think
> the impact of memes on socio-political information is overlooked.
> The project itself is in its early stages but so far I have developed a
> fairly thorough dataset from one years worth of images taken from Reddit.
> I've attempted to use some simple trends and models to classify the
> dimensionality of the network that different memes exist in. This initial
> dataset begins to set a standard for "natural" memetic diffusion, where in
> the future I hope to be able to identify motivated or "driven/drift"
> dissemination whereby information is artificially distributed (for example
> in political messaging). I'll also go into some detail about the dataset
> itself and how I collected it.
