Dear Colleagues,
I'm working with STEP<https://www.stepconference.org/AboutUs.cfm>, a non-profit organization, to put together one week of their STEM summer learning labs. These STEM learning labs provide 9-11th graders opportunities to explore a local community topic and how STEM can be used to identify solutions for an issue. They host a learning lab focused on Advanced Manufacturing, Law Enforcement and Public Safety, and STEM solutions. STEP also hosts other activities such as STEPCon<https://www.stepconference.org/Conference_info.cfm>, an annual conference for teachers and students. In 2022, STEP partnered with UCR to host a week centered on environmental stewardship<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2022/08/09/highlanders-mentor-teens-aspiring-stem-careers?utm_source=Inside+UCR+Weekly+Test&utm_campaign=69c07c537a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_08_10_04_31&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e039f36024-69c07c537a-92866107> and in 2023 on food sustainability<https://sites.google.com/view/stemsolutions2023/home>. This year we are working together again to host a week focused on the use of biotechnology to address emergent problems around human health, environmental challenges and security.
Dates: July 22 - July 26, 2024
Target Audience: High School students incoming 10th - 12th grades
Throughout the week, our goal is to provide students the opportunity to interact with a diverse set of people who are addressing these needs from researchers at UC Riverside, community partners and industries from the Inland Empire. By the end of the week, the students will work in teams to give a presentation with the presentations being an incubator idea pitch that addresses a particular challenge that they learned about during the week. The top three teams get a small scholarship.
We are looking for 6 additional lab partners who would be able to give short demonstrations to students. The lab group would provide a short 25 minute presentation, 3-4 times during a 2-3hr window as we have student groups rotate among stations.
If your lab is interested in participating in these efforts, please send me a reply with the following information by June 10th:
* What the topic of the presentation would be?
* Which theme would your presentation best align with (e.g. human health, environmental challenges and security)?
* Contact information for the person within the lab who would be the point person for the activity
* Do you have any local industry/community partners who would be interested in talking to high school students?
Please forward this along to any colleagues who might be interested in this opportunity. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
