And since you are coming by for coffee anyways, why not bring a toy to
donate to our holiday toy drive and help a needy child this season. Don't
miss this opportunity! This is the last time GSA will feed you for all of
2008!

Toy Drive now 12/3/08 through *Thursday* 12/18/08

GSA is helping our first year medical students with their toy drive. We are
in need of toys for children (ages of 2-16yrs, with the majority ranging
from 2-9yrs). Please bring your *unwrapped gift* to the GSA office Commons
203. They don't have to be fancy or expensive a barbie, a soccer ball, or a
cool educational book.....would be perfect gifts!!! Also, if anyone has any
used books that would suite this age range, any old soccer/athletic
equipment, or old toys to donate to the Community Center (Renacimiento or
Rebirth), this would also be greatly appreciated. The children you will be
helping are come from broken homes and anything that we do will make a HUGE
DIFFERENCE to these children. The toys will be distributed at an event on
December 19th, *donations* for this party are welcomed. For further details
please refer to: *http://www.dailybulletin.com/neighborhoodwatch/ci_3885659*

There will be boxes at the GSA office and the deadline is *December 18th at
5 pm*. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Evita Limon

James C. Young Colloquium, Call for Abstracts *1/16/09*

The Student Association of Graduate Anthropologists at the University of
California, Riverside invites you to submit your abstracts for the 29th
Annual James C. Young Colloquium. The colloquium, to be held on *February
14th 2009* from 8:30am-5pm in the 3rd Floor Commons, is an excellent
opportunity to present your ideas and to engage in a dialogue with students
and faculty from a variety of disciplines, departments, and campuses.

This year's theme is *People, Places, and Objects: Engaging the World*. We
seek papers and posters that reflect a commitment to increasing a fuller
understanding of all aspects of the human experience. We envision a
multi-disciplinary conference focusing on human interactions with - and
manipulations of - landscapes and environments, which are reflected through
the articulations of embodiment, remembering, and or engagement with people,
places, and or objects. Although grounded in anthropology, the colloquium
will focus on all facets of the human condition, past and present,
biological and social, individual and collective. Students from all
disciplines are encouraged to attend and present.

The Colloquium is dedicated to the memory of James C. Young, a scholar and
former University of California, Riverside student who lost his life in a
tragic accident. We honor his memory as a friend and colleague whose
dedication and commitment to anthropology is worthy of emulation. His
path-breaking study of health and decision-making in Pichataro, Mexico was a
milestone in the development of medical anthropology.

We welcome your diverse and exciting ideas.

Please submit abstracts of 250 words, using the attached form, in WORD.doc
format by *January 16, 2009 *to the James Young Committee at
JamesYoungColloq at gmail.com
*Electronic applications only please! *

*Equipment:* PowerPoint projector and *PC* laptops for PowerPoint will be
provided in each conference room on request (MAC users please make sure your
presentation is compatible with PC). Most memory media should be supported,
but it is always a good idea to bring your own laptop and to test out your
slide show before hand, just in case. Posters: Easels for posters will be
available on request. Contact the committee for further information on size
requirements.

For further Information, please direct all inquiries or questions to the
committee at JamesYoungColloq at gmail.com.

We hope to see you at our future events. Be sure to contact me if you have
any questions, comments, or concerns. You can also join our virtual
community on facebook. Take care!

Yours truly,

Alex Cortez
