SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Department of Education at UCLA seeks applications for temporary, part-time lecturers to teach within the Department of Education's undergraduate program and the Educational Leadership Program (ELP). Course(s) may include the following, and the lecturer may also be assigned additional courses according to the instructional needs in the department and in conformity with departmental lecturer workload policies:

* ED 156: "Introduction to Qualitative Research for Education and Social Transformation." Qualitative researchers who focus on education and social transformation often examine social roots of educational inequalities and injustices, and organization of teaching and learning across diverse settings to understand educational possibilities. The course provides an introduction to epistemological, theoretical, ethical, and political foundations of conducting qualitative research in education. Students become familiar with the breadth and scope of qualitative research. The course privileges theoretically-grounded, practical orientation that teaches students how qualitative researchers work individually and in teams to design studies that may ultimately support movement toward educational and social change. Assignments guide students through iterative research design process, which includes conducting needs assessment using qualitative data collection tools, making sense of pilot data, and negotiating research plans with stakeholders.

* ED 296D: "Advanced Qualitative Methods and Analysis." This course introduces conceptualization and application of qualitative analysis and will provide an opportunity for students to analyze and work with qualitative data (e.g., observational field notes, interview data, video data, document archival data) that they have gathered from a variety of data collection methods. Students will:
-Learn common strategies for qualitative research analysis, including working within and across forms of data.
-Become conversant in issues of trustworthiness and validity as they are understood in qualitative research, including learning how to "fine tune the coding scheme".
-Learn how to present findings and describe analysis processes in the methods and analytic section of your dissertation.

* M102: "Mexican Americans and Schools." Seminar, four hours. Theoretical and empirical overview of Chicana/Chicano educational issues in U.S., with special emphasis on disentangling effects of race, gender, class, and immigrant status on Chicana/Chicano educational attainment and achievement. Examination of how historical, social, political, and economic forces impact Chicana/Chicano educational experience. P/NP or letter grading.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A doctorate in Education or related discipline is required for graduate and undergraduate courses by date of hire.
