New Brunswick, N.J., January 27, 2022 — The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI<https://rutgers.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=07d8ec011e0ebcca6d379615b&id=23bb76ed72&e=50d68e4ca5>) is proud to open applications for the John Smartt Summer Scholars Program<https://rutgers.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=07d8ec011e0ebcca6d379615b&id=5876c3ed58&e=50d68e4ca5>! We look forward to hosting the program once again for all master’s students who are interested in gaining professional experience, networking with scholars in the field of higher education, and learning essential research skills related to equity and leadership in higher education. Applications are now open and will close on February 28, 2022 at 11:59 PM EST.

The John Smartt Summers Scholars program is named in honor of CMSI longtime supporter and philanthropist, John Smartt, and seeks to recruit ambitious individuals who demonstrate an interest in learning more about Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and those who exemplify self-determination. The internship, centered on the scholarship and programs of CMSI, will offer selected interns practical research skills that will help them as they move forward in their careers.

For the first time, the John Smartt Summer Scholars program will be held in person, where interns will work on-campus alongside the Center’s professional and research staff, will have access to faculty mentoring, and will gain experience with research, including opportunities to develop and publish their scholarship.

“Each summer the program gets better and better,” says Marybeth Gasman, the Executive Director of the Rutgers Center of Minority Serving Institutions, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair, and a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University. “We are delighted to host students and give them the support they need to grow in this field.”

In order to be eligible for consideration, the applicant must be a master’s student and be seeking research and administrative experience. The applicant must also be available to work 19.5 hours/week during the six-week session of the internship. Additionally, the applicant should have an interest in conducting research related to MSIs.

Interns will receive generous benefits such as the opportunity to produce and publish research, gain administrative experience, receive faculty mentorship, and financial compensation. This opportunity includes on-campus housing at Rutgers University—New Brunswick, a $1,500 stipend, faculty mentoring, research and professional development opportunities to expand upon your research. Selected interns will be responsible for covering their own transportation to New Brunswick as well as meals and transportation throughout the duration of the internship.

Future updates about the John Smartt Summer Scholars Program will be announced on https://cmsi.gse.rutgers.edu/jsss-program<https://rutgers.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=07d8ec011e0ebcca6d379615b&id=a5b86215b8&e=50d68e4ca5>.
