Invitation to Participate in Research Activities

Project: Impact of Training on Direct Behavior Rating-Classroom Management (DBR-CM) Ratings
Principal Investigator: Wesley Sims, Ph.D., NCSP
Sponsor: Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside

You are invited to participate in this research because you are an undergraduate or graduate student studying, faculty member, or professional education, psychology, special education, school psychology and/or a closely related field. The purpose of this project is to continue the accumulation of reliability and validity evidence for the Direct Behavior Rating-Classroom Management (DBR-CM), a usable, flexible, and defensible assessment of educator management practices. The proposed study builds on previous findings related to the DBR-CM by further examining the psychometric properties of the DBR-CM form.

The DBR-CM is a brief assessment of educator classroom management across four domains. For example, the level, amount, and types of praise a teacher uses in his/her classroom is rated using a 0 - 10 scale. For more information, see www.dbr-cm.com<http://www.dbr-cm.com>. If interested in participating in this study, please do not view the online training.

If you choose to participate in this project, you will be asked to provide some general information about yourself. You will be asked to provide information about your level of education, professional development and training, teaching experiences, certifications, and other demographic information. You will be asked to participate in some form of training for the use of the DBR-CM. You will then use the DBR-CM to rate teachers’ classroom management behavior in videos provided by the research team. Following completion of research activities, you will be asked to provide information about your experiences during the project. This information will be obtained using a brief survey. Your participation in study activities will require between 150 and 180 minutes. The risks associated with participating in this project are minimal. Some minor inconveniences may be associated with completion of paperwork and surveys used in this project. It is also important to note that you may discontinue participation in project activities at any time, without penalty, for any reason. No personally identifying information will be shared with anyone should you choose to participate. You may decline to participate in project activities. If you consent to participate in the project, but later change your mind, you may withdraw at any time. There are no penalties or consequences of any kind if you decide not to participate or for withdrawal from participation. To thank potential participants in the study, 10 randomly selected individuals will be chosen to receive a $25 gift card. Participation is not required to be entered into this drawing. Gift card incentives will be distributed at the conclusion of study data collection activities.

Research personnel, including the principal investigator, welcome the opportunity to answer any question you have about this project. If you have further questions about this project or if you have a research-related problem, you may contact the principal investigator, Wesley Sims, Ph.D., NCSP (951-827-5582 or wesley.sims at ucr.edu<mailto:wesley.sims at ucr.edu>).
