Hello everyone,Happy New Year! Our first Geospatial/GIS meetup of 2026 will  
be on Tuesday, January 20 from 12:00-12:50 pm.The meetup will take place on  
Zoom, and will be recorded. UCR graduate student Ryan Bruellman will give a  
presentation titled “More Than You Bargained for: Dollar Store Influences  
onOne's Food Environment.”Access to fresh, healthy food is crucial for  
individuals to have a healthy diet and offset aging-related diseases.   
Supermarkets and traditional grocery stores serve as a major food source  
and access to these stores is a major consideration for designation of a  
“food desert” by the United States Department of Agriculture.  Areas  
designated as “food swamps”, on the other hand are areas with high  
concentrations of fast food and convenience store locations relative to  
traditional grocery stores.  Despite rising grocery costs, dollar stores  
are often overlooked as a grocery source.  This talk will demonstrate the  
importance of considering dollar store access impact on health and  
emphasize dollar store relevancy to health policy on both a local, Southern  
California level as well as a national level.Ryan is a 5th and final year  
Ph.D. candidate in Genetics,Genomics & Bioinformatics at UCR,  
co-mentored by Dr. Chandra Reynolds andDr. Ilana Bennett.  His research  
focuseson how modifiable behaviors (e.g., prolonged sitting, physical  
activity, diet)influence early aging-related health, and how genetic and  
the environmentalfactors interact with these behaviors. The meetup will
