Hello everyone,

This is a gentle reminder that our next Geospatial/GIS meetup will be held
on Zoom *in two days*, on Wednesday November 12, from 12:00 - 12:50 pm.

https://ucr.zoom.us/j/91599392166?pwd=LmLhdsfq1EJapb95yLlVeGalMUCBa3.1

Meeting ID: 915 9939 2166
Passcode: 743342

(As the meetup begins, we'll appreciate your patience as we ask UCR
affiliates to engage with a new attendance app.)

Announcements to start the meetup will include encouragement to register
for UC GIS Week
<https://community-ucgis.hub.arcgis.com/pages/uc-gis-week-2025>, November
18-20, as well as information about the sunsetting of Classic Story Maps.

At this meetup, EEOB PhD candidate Gary Qin will present on *Using QGIS in
freshwater health assessment of the Santa Ana River Watershed.*
The Santa Ana River Watershed is one of the largest and most urbanized
watersheds in Southern California. The challenges the watershed faces in
maintaining proper ecosystem functioning and supplying crucial ecosystem
services to its inhabitants require assessments and solutions that consider
ecological, hydrological, and social measures of freshwater health. A study
was conducted to establish a baseline assessment of freshwater health in
the watershed, which can be used in follow-up assessments and scenario
analysis. This talk will outline how QGIS and geospatial analyses were
utilized in the assessment to provide context, visualize spatial variation,
and explore potential solutions for sustaining freshwater health in the
watershed.
*Gary Qin is a sixth-year Ph.D. candidate in Evolution, Ecology, and
Organismal Biology at UC Riverside. Before beginning his graduate studies,
he received a B.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology and a
B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Washington.
He is currently advised by Dr. Helen Regan and Dr. Kurt Anderson, and his
dissertation focuses on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem service
delivery in California.*

Registering for the meetup is appreciated but not required. If you haven't
already done so, you may register through Eventbrite
<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/geospatialgis-meetups-tickets-1730709040329?aff=oddtdtcreator>,
or respond to the calendar invitation many of you received on October 29.

After the meetup, notes and a link to the recording will be shared.

Feel free to forward this email, especially to anyone who may be interested
in the presentation topic.

I hope you’ll have a good holiday tomorrow, and that you can join us
on Wednesday!

Best,

*Janet Reyes*
