Hello everyone,
Our first Geospatial/GIS meetup of the academic year will be on Thursday, October 17 from 12:00-12:50 pm.
The meetup will be held in Rivera Library, Room 140 and on Zoom.
(To find Rivera 140: turn right after entering Rivera Library. Keep walking until you pass the elevators. Room 140 is on the corner of the hallway you’ll see to your left.)
To register for the meetup, please respond to this calendar invitation. We also have an Eventbrite<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/geospatialgis-meetups-tickets-1015444550987?aff=oddtdtcreator> that will allow you to register (some of you have already done so – thank you!) Registration is appreciated but not required.
Here’s the short version of the Zoom information:
https://ucr.zoom.us/j/96333080483?pwd=RQ2Psl8RPT2pxbS0PCiRWbTJ7D2tVu.1
Meeting ID: 963 3308 0483
Passcode: 886956
The meetup will be recorded.
UCR History Professor David Biggs will speak on Historic Maps and Waterfront Histories in Southeast Asia.
Southeast Asia's largest cities are sinking! Growing out of colonial ports located on mudflats and river deltas, these cities are home to a majority of Southeast Asia's 700 million people and are economic hubs for old and new economies. They are also situated among some of the most biodiverse terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems on Earth, so strategies for saving these cities range from heavy shoreline engineering to re-greening to city migration. Southeast Asia's urban waterfronts are important sites for little-known stories of the modern past and visions for urban-green futures. Join environmental historian and UCR Professor David Biggs for a tour of urban waterfronts combining use of historic maps with local and archival research.
David Biggs is a professor of Southeast Asian and environmental history in the History Department at UCR.
The meetup will start with announcements of general interest, including news about November's GIS Day and UC GIS Week<https://uc-gis-ucop.hub.arcgis.com/pages/uc-gis-week-2024> events.
Note that the Fall 2024 Education Open House<https://registration.esri.com/flow/esri/24eduophofa/registration/page/registration-details> at Esri headquarters in Redlands, CA begins immediately after our meetup!
Feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested.
I hope you’ll be able to join us!
Best,
-Janet Reyes
