This is a new position open at UH Manoa but based in Hilo on the Big Island
where our College maintains several research stations.
To apply:
https://www.schooljobs.com/careers/hawaiiedu/jobs/4257631/assistant-specialist-arthropod-identification-and-monitoring?keywords=arthropod&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs
*Title: Arthropod Identification and Monitoring Specialist (S3) (Station
in Hilo) *
FTE 45 R, 40 E, I15 I (11 months) *Closing date* 1/31/2024 11:59 PM Hawaii
ST
Unit: PEPS, and UH Manoa (Supported by Hawaii and Kauai Counties, to be
stationed in Hawaii County)
Background: The state of Hawaii is subject to the highest influx rate of
invasive species in the US, and Hawaii Island is the center of the plant
industry. There is a continuous invasion of insects and other pests, many
of which become serious pests and impact agriculture, human health, and
native ecosystems. Many additional arthropod threats to Hawaii persist
including the red imported fire ant (RIFA) found in California and the red
palm mite in Florida are posing potential threat to Hawaii. Since a
retirement in 2015, CTAHR has had an immediate gap in our ability to
identify, monitoring and respond to new arthropod invasive species. Hawaii
Island has a diverse and substantial agricultural sector that demands
rigorous invasive species management. In particular, the landscape and
ornamental nursery industry ships large numbers of plants among islands and
to the U.S. mainland, thus, Hawaii Island economy is particularly
vulnerable to being shut down due to new pest infestations. This position
will support all CTAHR Strategic Initiatives, in particular the “Vibrant
Tropical and Pacific Island Agriculture and Food Security”.
*Duties: *The faculty in this position is expected to lead educational and
applied research efforts in identification, monitoring and *management of
arthropod pests of specialty crops and invasive species *in Hawaii, and
serve as the Coordinator of the statewide *Integrated Pest Management *program
for the ornamental industries including but not limited to floriculture,
foliage, nursery and landscape crops. The main task is to develop Best
Management Practices (BMPs) for new invasive arthropod pests in
collaboration with faculty across campus, extension agents, Agricultural
Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) and other professionals from Hawaii
Invasive Species Council (HISC), Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species
(CGAPS), Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA), USDA APHIS, California
Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and etc to coordinate effective
and efficient protocols of *rapid response and quarantine measures to new
pest introductions*, other duties include but not limited to:
- • Serving stakeholders through applied research, information delivery,
and the development of appropriate insect identification training/teaching
materials.
- • Supporting ADSC’s arthropod pest identification through regular
consultation, guidance, information sharing, and mutually beneficial
efforts that support both parties goals.
- • Develop novel prevention strategies and innovative research.
- • Develop and publish extension publications for stakeholders.
- • Develop and teach an undergraduate or graduate level course that fit
with the needs of the department and contribute to an internationally
recognized Program, such as Genomic Identification of Insects.
- • Coordinate with CDFA and maintain the nursery certification program.
- • Collect and synthesize information from county, regional and
statewide program development committees, clientele needs assessments,
trend data, clientele organizations, and key industry leaders to guide the
context quality and priority of programming.
- • Support Extension Agents with programming and content related to the
subject matter expertise through program planning meetings, individual
consultation, site visits with clientele, speaking at educational programs,
and in other educational roles.
- • Monitor insecticide resistant insect populations to current chemical
management strategies, test emerging chemicals available, develop
insecticide rotation programs, and perform other research as part of an
insect resistance management strategy.
- • Seek biological and cultural management options from preplant,
production to post-harvest.
- • Maintain the integrity of statewide IPM programs (e.g. a curriculum,
research or extension), serve as an IPM program advisor and coordinator.
The incumbent is expected to acquire extramural funds that complement the
extension IPM programs, in collaboration with plant production scientists,
ADSC or other professionals including growers, crop consultants, state and
federal agencies, allied agribusiness and industry personnel, teach one
course for undergraduate or graduate program in Entomology, mentor graduate
students, publish papers and take turns to teach seminar with the
Entomology Graduate Program.
*Minimum qualifications: *Ph.D. in Entomology or a closely related
field. *Desirable
qualifications: *Post-doctoral research experience in arthropod
identification, IPM research, include evidence of multidisciplinary
collaborations, experience in securing extramural funding.
Working Conditions: Extensive travel throughout the state, valid driver's
license. The position will periodically require working before 8 am or
after 5pm, with occasional weekend duties. The position will require basic
or molecular arthropod identification skills, application of pesticides,
exposure to weather extremes, sun, and agronomic field equipment. The
position will require some heavy lifting and repetitive motion.
