Hello Ent. Dept,
Please read below for some safety reminders and updates:
COVID Worksite Specific Plan Approval Process:
There have been a few questions regarding the approval process for COVID-19, so here is a brief overview.
• PI completes plan and alerts their chair/supervisor that the plan is ready for review
• Rick Redak reviews and approves. You may need to email Redak to confirm he received this email and has approved it. Several have gotten lost in the system.
• EH&S reviews and sets as “Ready for Use".
• Best practice: add all required members to your plan before submitting for approval.

Hazardous Waste reminders:
Broken Glass Boxes must only be used for uncontaminated (clean) broken glass
• EH&S does NOT provide broken glass boxes. Labs need to purchase and dispose of this themselves in regular trash.
• EH&S provides 5-gallon containers for contaminated broken glass
• Waste containers are allowed to accumulate for 180 days
• If containers are 80% full request pickup, do not wait 180 days. ·
EH&S provides many waste containers, information at https://ehs.ucr.edu/waste
• Sharps containers, tag holders, 1-gallon containers, buckets can be picked up at our front desk.
Epi-Pen Training
We recently had an issue in the Entomology department regarding the need of an Epi-pen but luckily those involved in the incident were recently trained in first aid and Epi-pen use. This proactive training helped us avoid potentially serious consequences.
It is good practice to have as many people trained as possible.
EH&S can now provide EpiPen training for labs that would like to maintain an EpiPen in their first aid kit
Contact EH&S Field Safety at pamela.see at ucr.edu to discuss training options
RSS Biosafety BUA transition
UCR biosafety program is transitioning from ORI to EH&S
• BUAs will be managed through same RSS software as LHAT and Chemical Inventory ·
• Transition planned for January 2022
• Look out for email updates in coming weeks, contact ehsbiosafety at ucr.edu with any questions
Campus Closure Services
EH&S closed along with campus
• November 25-26
• December 23-January 2
Hazardous Waste Pickups
• Contact EH&S two weeks prior to campus closure for large volumes of waste
• Begin looking through labs for unwanted material
• Any immediate concerns should be forwarded to EH&S o EH&S can provide additional secondaries for storage of waste during 2-week closure
• Additional biohazards bins may be provided
