Subject: Vacancy Announcement: Research Entomologist - Miami, FL
To:

The following announcement for a Research Entomologist position with the
USDA-ARS Subtropical Horticulture Research Station (SHRS), Miami, Florida
has been posted on USAJOBS.GOV. The announcement will open Wednesday,
March 17, 2021 through Friday, April 16, 2021. The incumbent develops
detection systems and pest suppression strategies for exotic pest insects
that pose a threat to U.S. agriculture. Specifically, research objectives
will be: 1) Research on basic biology and behavior of pests that have
recently invaded the U.S. through Florida; 2) Develop new/improved
semiochemical-based trapping systems for invasive insect pests and their
biological control agents. Each new species will require pioneering work
and new bioassay techniques to address problems associated with research on
invasive pests such as difficulties in obtaining large numbers of
individuals of known age and physiological state needed for semiochemical
research, as well as limited knowledge of the insect's biology. Chemical
cues will be investigated in collaboration with chemists and physiologists;
3) Integrate newly developed detection and control strategies with existing
technologies and systems to provide management programs for exotic insects.
Effective methods for population estimation based on trap interpretation
will also be developed to accurately reflect changes due to movement,
mortality and reproduction. For pests that have not yet invaded the U.S.,
research will be conducted with international collaborators that will
facilitate research where pest populations exist.

Please let anyone who may be eligible to apply know about this announcement.
