Dear colleagues,

Greetings. As an initiative of the Entomology department's Community
Building Committee, we plan to organize a workshop titled *“Applying for
Jobs in Academia.”* This workshop will meet approximately once every three
weeks over a five-month period (rest of Spring quarter + Summer) and is
designed to support individuals preparing for the academic job market.

The workshop will begin with an overview of the academic job application
process and how to think strategically about preparing an application
package. From there, we will take a structured, writing-focused approach.
Ahead of each session, participants will work on one component of their
application and share drafts with peers in the group for discussion and
feedback. We will also share sample statements and application materials
for reference throughout the workshop.

Over the course of the series, the goal is for participants to develop a
complete application package, including: research statement, teaching
statement, and cover letter.

We will also spend time discussing diversity statements. While they may not
be required for every job currently being advertised, much of the work we
do in academia still intersects with this space. The workshop will provide
an opportunity to think about how those experiences can be articulated
thoughtfully and, when needed, adapted to different application contexts.

In addition, we plan to invite faculty from our department to join select
sessions to share their experiences with preparing application materials
and navigating academic job interviews.
