We have support for one graduate research assistantship (Master’s in
Entomology) at the University of Idaho available starting spring or summer
2023. The research project will focus on understanding the role of thrips,
aphids, and other insect vectors in the transmission of viruses in alfalfa
and effects on yield and quality. We recently found a new virus in alfalfa
and are working on clarifying its epidemiology, including the role of
vectors in its transmission, and interactions with other viruses.
Additional opportunities will be available to acquire entomological
experience in other research and extension activities in potato, sugar
beet, and other field crops. The student will be based at the Kimberly
Research & Extension Center, in the heart of agricultural production in
south-central Idaho. For consideration, send a brief statement of interest

Hope this message finds you are doing well. I have support for two PhD
students on a USDA funded project to evaluate biocontrol compatibility with
changing adoption of insecticide management in alfalfa (announcement
attached). There are components focused on manipulating predator diversity
and life stage diversity for pest suppression, landscape modeling to
include environmental and pest management factors on the success of
biocontrol, and determining the value of biocontrol as the project includes
an economist/agronomist.

Ideally the students would start spring semester (January) 2023 or the
start of field season 2023. Please share widely with potential students and
others that may pass this opportunity along.
