Hello Everyone,

Hope you have had a good end to winter quarter, are getting through grading, and will be enjoying some much deserved rest during the days of spring break ahead this week.

Looking towards spring quarter, I’m excited to announce a talk by Dr. Jennifer Doyle on the occasion of her 2024 book, Shadow of My Shadow.

The talk will take place Thursday April 10 at 4 PM in the English Department Conference Room, HMNSS 2212.

In this talk Dr. Doyle discusses and shares excerpts from her most recent book, Shadow of My Shadow. Shadow of my Shadow describes the forms of loss and decompositions of the self particular to workplace harassment and the paranoid ecologies it nurtures. Anchored by an account of the experience of being stalked by a student, this book features chapters on the debilitating forms of alienation generated by violations of queer work; sexual harassment and workplace paranoia; the forms of disavowal which allow harassment to flourish, and a meditation on the way that sexual violence shapes relationships between women within heteropatriarchy.

Attached is a flyer with all the relevant schedule information, abstract, and bio. Refreshments will be provided. Please circulate widely!

Thank you to Dr. Doyle for offering to share her work, and to the department’s Christy Gray, and to Drs. Mark Minch-de León and Chris Berardino, for planning, flyer design, and scheduling.

Hope to see you on April 10! And meanwhile, take care,

Dr. Tobias

"We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands."
