All,

Martha Plender passed away this past weekend, after an illness that
rapidly depleted her strength but not her spirit. Her son and husband were
with her at Odyssey House Hospice in Palm Desert, where she had been moved
from Eisenhower Hospital the day before.

For many years Martha was a Senior Lecturer in the writing program, as
well as co-director of the Inland Area Writing Project. She was the force
behind the establishment of the High-School Visitation Program, and she
participated in the Berkeley diagnostic readings for two decades. Her work
in the IAWP, which included leading the summer institute ten times as well
as innumerable inservices and advanced institutes, brought her into contact
with hundreds of teachers in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Martha made and kept many friends. I'm sure that many of us feel this
loss with a particular sadness because she has been a true companion on our
way. Martha's devotion to public service, teaching, and the life of ideas
was intense, joyful, and an inspiration to others.

The funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, at
Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, 4050 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA 92057
([760] 757-3651). There will be a reception afterward at the Plenders'
Encenitas home. A memorial mass is tentatively scheduled at the mission the
day before (Friday) at 1:00 p.m.
