12.0pt'> Martha Plender passed away this past weekend,
after an illness that rapidly depleted her strength but not her spirit. Her
son and husband were with her at Odyssey House Hospice in <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Palm</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Desert</st1:PlaceType>, where she had been moved from <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Eisenhower</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Hospital</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> the day before. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'> For many years Martha was a Senior Lecturer in
the writing program, as well as co-director of the Inland Area Writing Project.
She was the force behind the establishment of the High-School Visitation
Program, and she participated in the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Berkeley</st1:place></st1:City>
diagnostic readings for two decades. Her work in the IAWP, which included
leading the summer institute ten times as well as innumerable inservices and advanced
institutes, brought her into contact with hundreds of teachers in <st1:City
w:st="on">Riverside</st1:City> and <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San
Bernardino</st1:place></st1:City> counties. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'> Martha made and kept many friends. I’m
sure that many of us feel this loss with a particular sadness because she has
been a true companion on our way. Martha’s devotion to public
service, teaching, and the life of ideas was intense, joyful, and an inspiration
to others. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'> The funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on <b><span
style='font-weight:bold'>Saturday, May 31</span></b>, at Mission San Luis Rey
Cemetery, 4050 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA 92057 ([760] 757-3651). There
will be a reception afterward at the Plenders’ Encenitas home. A memorial
mass is tentatively scheduled at the mission the day before (Friday) at 1:00
p.m. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
