CALL FOR SPRING 2008 INSTRUCTIONAL INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE GRANTS 

Dear UCR Faculty:

 

The Office of Instructional Development is currently accepting proposals for
the Instructional Innovation and Excellence Grants.  This series of
competitive grants provide support for faculty efforts to enhance existing
curriculum, create new pedagogical approaches for engaging students in
university learning, developing assessments of student learning outcomes,
and develop mentoring programs for students and junior instructors.  Funds
are also provided to support students in enriching their education through
faculty-mentored research.  Funding for these grants has been increased;
detailed descriptions of each grant category, application and deadline
information is available at www.instruction.ucr.edu
<http://www.instruction.ucr.edu/>  .   Please note that the Spring 2008
deadline for most grants is Friday, April 11th.

 

Grant categories for Faculty include:  

*	Instructional Support Grant for Undergraduate Education

Consideration will be given to proposals that seek to make minor course
revisions; purchase of supplies of a specialized nature; purchase of minor
pieces of equipment; development, rental, or purchase of audiovisual
materials; field trips; and honoraria for  distinguished guest speakers who
are included as part of the planned course curriculum.  Proposals from
colleges/departments to invite prominent outside speakers with expertise in
curricular design, assessment of student    learning, and pedagogy to give a
presentation, will be considered. (Maximum Award $1,000)

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION:  Friday, April 11, 2008

 

*        Assessment & Student Learning Outcome Grant

Funds are available for academic departments to conduct a workshop, retreat,
or planning session for the purpose of  exploring program goals,
establishing measures of student learning outcomes, and curricular
revisions.   Funds may also be used to invite outside speakers that will
assist departments in revising curriculum, implementing innovative pedagogy
and assessing student learning outcomes.   (Maximum Award $1,500)

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION:  Friday, April 11, 2008

 

*	Instructional Innovation Grant

chGrants.html)  Consideration will be given to proposals that seek to create
new pedagogical approaches for engaging students in university learning.
Areas considered for support include development of strategies that
emphasize active learning, experiential learning, and effective use of
technologies and flexible classroom spaces.  Travel to workshops on
pedagogy, or conferences directly related to teaching also may be considered
for funding.  (Maximum Award $15,000)

 

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION:  Friday, April 11, 2008 

 

*	Excellence in Mentoring Grant

Consideration will be given to proposals that focus on faculty mentoring of
undergraduate students.   Funds are also available in a separate competitive
pool for proposals from senior faculty or departments to mentor junior
instructors in their role as university teachers. Successful projects will
develop or implement an innovative approach for mentoring.  (Maximum Award
$2,500)   

 

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION:  Friday, April 11, 2008 

 

Please encourage undergraduate students who are doing research under your
guidance to consider submitting a proposal for the Undergraduate Research
Grant.  This is a great opportunity for students to experience writing their
own proposal to support the funding of their research.                    

*	Undergraduate Research Grant

Funding for this grant is allocated to encourage undergraduates to engage in
laboratory or scholarly research, field work, or other creative activity
under the close guidance of a faculty mentor. Student travel for the purpose
of presenting their work at a   scholarly conference will also be considered
an acceptable use of the funds.  Students interested in pursuing research
opportunities are encouraged to submit proposals for funding.  Proposals
will be evaluated based on the applicant's experience, long term goals,
purpose, and proposed original research or creative endeavor.  Grants will
be awarded on a competitive basis regardless of class standing or major.
