Subject: CFP: Women and Education (4/15/07; collection)

Call for proposals for a collection tentatively titled, Dominant Culture
and the Education of Women, and edited by Julia C. Paulk.

Many female writers have demonstrated a keen interest in the education of
women. They showed this not only through their fiction but also through the
preparation of educational materials for women, biographies of women
throughout history, and/or defenses of their own educations. Examples of
such writers include Christine de Pizan (France), Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz
(Mexico), Lydia Maria Child (US), Catharine Beecher (US), and Clorinda Matto
de Turner (Peru). This essay collection aims to investigate the ways in
which female authors negotiate the limitations placed on women by the
dominant discourse of their day in order to promote female education, which
was often deemed a threatening enterprise. We hope to include essays that
focus on a wide variety of cultures and time periods in this collection.
Thus, comparative approaches are especially welcome.

Please send proposals (200-250 words) to Julia C. Paulk, Dept. of Foreign
Languages and Literatures, P.O. Box 1881, Marquette University, Milwaukee,
WI 53201 or julia.paulk at marquette.edu. Proposals should be submitted by
April 15, 2007. If accepted for publication, completed essays
(approximately 5,000 words) should be submitted by June 30, 2007. An
academic press has expressed interest in publishing this manuscript.
