First Case Study for "No Wonder Brides Often Turn Into Frankenstein"

Response #1

SCORE: HIGH FAIL

Comments: Although this essay features at least one solid example, there are
simply too many sentence level errors to warrant a passing score. This
essay is highly dependent on vague language that is not persuasive.

Response #2

SCORE: HIGH FAIL

Comment: This essay offers a cursory response to the topic questions, and it
includes a nice example and some perceptive points against Barry's argument.
However, there is a significant lack of development in each area of the
essay, and there are frequent major and minor grammar and sentence structure
errors throughout.

Response #3

SCORE: Low Pass

Comment: This is a marginal passing essay. Although it follows the fiver
paragraph format (missing a conclusion), it adequately summarizes Barry's
position, offers a clear argument against Barry, and provides sufficient
examples to support that argument.

Response #4

SCORE: Pass

Comment: This is a clearly passing response, one that manages to both
fulfill the requirements of the essay topic and provide original, fresh
insight on the topic at hand. If the essay were a bit longer, it might
warrant a high pass. Many students will be confused by the writer's use of
exaggeration and hyperbole, mimicking Barry. This may call for another
conversation about tone for an essay and how humor and wit can aid in the
engagement of reading material.

Second Case Study for Margaret Lawrence's "The Shack"

Response #1

SCORE: LOW PASS

Comment: This is an incredibly brief essay, but it does answer the topic
questions and include an example. This is a marginal passing essay as one
is likely to encounter.

Response #2

SCORE: LOW PASS

Comment: The essay includes a clear summary of Lawrence's main point, a
thesis statement indicating the author's opinion on Lawrence's essay, and
solid examples to back up that opinion. The writing is not sophisticated,
but it is good enough to warrant a passing grade.

Response #3

SCORE: PASS

Comment: This is a clearly competent essay. The summary and examples are
incredibly detailed. Perhaps the only problems are its lack of paragraph
development and occasional sentence level error. Nevertheless, it is
obviously a passing paper, and the amount of detail set forward here raised
the success of the essay.

Response #4

SCORE: (ESL) HIGH FAIL

Comment: This author clearly understands Lawrence's argument, but s/he
simply lacks the command of written English necessary to pass.
