You are invited to attend the presentation of

"Militarization and the Critical

Re-Visions of Asian/America:

Feminist Subjects and Black-Asian Encounters"

by

Setsu Shigematsu, Ph.D.

University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellow
Postdoctoral Fellow, FS Institute for International Studies, Stanford
University,
and candidate for Assistant Professor of English

"By focusing on militarization as a globalizing social technology, this
project attempts to recast how we conceptualize the relationship between
Asian/American Studies, Japanese film, critical race studies, feminist
theory and visual studies. The presentation offers a rearticulation of
these fields of knowledge through an analysis of the avant-garde film,
Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974, by the Japanese director Kazuo Hara.
This film analysis suggests a critical re-vision of the Asian/American
relation across national, linguistic, racial and gendered geographies, and
asks, Who can be cast as the proper subjects of the Asian/American relation?
Through a consideration of how global militarization forms the condition of
possibility for a field of performatively "transgressive" feminist
cross-racial practices, the presumed "racial" identity of the (East) Asian
subject undergoes a crises of self-recognition."
