Hi everybody,

I want to remind you about the department's Independent Research Awards
(IRA's). If you have had a scholarly article accepted or published this
year, and have not already submitted it for an IRA, now is your chance.
Please leave a copy of the article and the acceptance letter in my box this
month. Here is the announcement that gives the award's rules:

The English Department announces the establishment of the Independent
Research Award for Lecturers. The IRA is intended to recognize significant
publication. The award of $250 will go to any Lecturer who publishes a
substantial scholarly article in a refereed journal or in a book published
by a university press or equivalent. An authored scholarly book will also
qualify for this award. Encyclopedia articles do not qualify. An article
should be a minimum of 15 typescript pages (3500 words). It must be either
published or accepted for publication during the current academic year. All
awards are made by an Independent Research Award Committee, chaired by the
Chair of the Committee on Writing Courses. Lecturers whose articles have
appeared during the current year should submit an offprint or photocopy to
the committee. Lecturers whose articles have been accepted during the
current year should submit a typescript along with the acceptance letter.
Funds will be distributed immediately, and awards will be announced at the
annual end-of-quarter department party. This is a non-competitive award. All
publications that meet the above-stated criteria will qualify.

Thanks for your attention.

Best,

Steve Axelrod
