Dear Fellow Travellers:
It seems as if the English Department, out of a sudden, new
found generosity, has seen fit to purchase new computers and
printers for us. But perhaps their
Christian/Judiac/Muslim/Taoist/Paganish/secular humanist
charity was helped along by the Union's grievance. The
following is what we have, thus far, wrested from the powers
that be. I think you should all read the letter of
resolution below to find out what else the University has so
generously -- out of the goodness of its heart-- offered the
lecturers. By the way, did I mention that all of this is
guaranteed to us in the MOU?
Just remember fellow lecturers, the immortal words of the
Talking Heads: This ain't no party/this ain't no disco/this
ain't no foolin' around.
Yours in Solidarity,
Stephanie Kay

RE: Informal Resolutions to Instructional Support Grievance
Dear Ms. Baringer:
The purpose of this letter is to summarize the informal
resolutions that UCR and AFT have reached with respect to the
grievance filed on November 14, 2005 by the union on behalf
of Keith Danner et. al. in the English Department alleging
violation of Article 8, Section A1. Also, it is our mutual
understanding that the Union has agreed to withdraw this
grievance in its entirety in exchange for the following
proposed actions by the University:
1. for spring quarter 2006 only, the College of Humanities,
Arts, and Social Sciences and the English Department will
provide an additional four (4) faculty offices to alleviate
the overcrowding office space for NSFs in the English
Department;
2. for the remainder of the 2005-2006 academic year only, the
College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and the
English Department will provide additional IT support to help
ensure computers assigned to NSFs in the English Department
are equipped with up-to-date software and functional hardware
(e.g., printer). Departmental MSO, Susan Brown, is the
designated individual for NSFs to report any problems and
concerns that require follow-up with IT support staff;
3. the appropriate administrator in the College of
Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Dean’s Office will work
with the Creative Writing and Dance Departments to ensure
that NSFs have reasonable access to a working telephone and
answering equipment or services in their assigned offices;
4. the Labor Relations Office along with the Academic
Personnel Office will work with the designated administrators
in each college dean’s offices to provide general guidelines
to the departments regarding reasonable telephone access for
NSFs, wherever applicable. A copy of this written
communication will be provided to the union when it is
finalized.:
a. if a department has alternative arrangement other than
automatic-dial service for work-related long distance
telephone calls (e.g., long-distance calling card), the
department will inform its NSFs at the beginning of each
quarter of its availability, applicable department rules for
access and use, and department contact person(s);
b. the department will provide all its NSFs with the
applicable user manual and necessary technical assistance for
the telephone answering equipment in NSF offices;
c. the department will make reasonable and timely effort, at
least quarterly, to includeupdate its NSFs in the
appropriate UCR databases to facilitate NSFs listings in the
UCR campus-wide and/or departmental web-based faculty
directory.
Consistent with Article 32, Section B.1, these informal
resolutions are final and not precedential.
Thank you for your willingness and cooperative spirit to
resolve the issues raised in this grievance. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me either by
