Yes, many thanks to Deborah. We could not have made the progress we have
without her. Best, Steve

Dear Deborah,

Thank you for your hard and persistent work on the TAships as well. I feel
that we are in a better place today than we have been for many months. While
I know we could find our selves back in the mud pile, at least we have a few
positives today that we might not have had.

Thanks to all,

Emory

To the Dept --

I was asked to join Steve and Chris Deviny at the meeting with Joel Martin
today to discuss our concerns about TA allocations, and I want to report to
the department about it. We came away feeling cautiously optimistic -- the
Dean finally seems to understand that we need more support for our
continuing graduate students and that he (or his office) needs to step up
and be an active advocate for better funding from the central
administration. And he was clearly concerned that we might not be able
to admit any new students next year. The upshot of the meeting was --
well, yes, another meeting. Steve, Katherine, and I will work with Scott
Coltrane and Maurya Simon early next week to build the case for more
TAships and/or other sources of support for our continuing
students. After that meeting, we should have a better idea about whether
we can proceed with graduate admissions. The English Dept is not alone in
the problem of support for continuing students. Assuming we reach an
agreement about the numbers, the Dean will make the pitch to the central
administration for more funds.

I am very grateful to both Steve and Katherine for making sure that the
issue of TA allocations stayed front and center in their long, frustrating
negotiations with the Dean. I am sure that Katherine will be a wonderful
Interim Chair. We are far from living "happily ever after" but we are, I
believe, in a much better position to face the battles that lie ahead.

And thanks to Greg for his eloquent memo earlier today.

Best,
Deborah
