Hello UCR researchers,

The May 2023 12 Months of Research Safety is on Proper Use and Application of Power Strips. Electrical Safety is a critical component of all types of lab spaces, and improper use of power strips can lead to hazardous situations for researchers and significant damage to equipment being powered with them. Read the attached flyer to learn some tips on how to use power strips appropriately in your research space.

I also wanted to highlight our Mercury Thermometer Exchange Program. We have recently seen an increase in mercury thermometers breaking on campus. Mercury has significant health and environmental risks, and a mercury thermometer breakage can take a significant amount of time to properly clean up, impacting your lab operations. Review the attached flyer and our website at https://ehs.ucr.edu/laboratory/mercury to find out how EH&S can replace your mercury thermometer for free. If you have questions or need help determining if your thermometers are filled with mercury, contact us at ehslaboratory at ucr.edu<mailto:ehslaboratory at ucr.edu>. Our 12 Months of Research Safety Topic in June will provide more information on this topic.

If you have questions about anything research safety related, please send us a message at ehslaboratory at ucr.edu<mailto:ehslaboratory at ucr.edu>. All of our previous 12 Months of Research Safety flyers are available on our website at https://ehs.ucr.edu/laboratory/12monthsofresearchsafety. Subscription to this listserv is based on membership in an active LHAT and is updated on a monthly basis.

Thanks,
Patrick
