The Challenges of Playwriting and Contemporary Theatre

Thursday, May 24, 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Studio Theatre, ARTS 113

The Department of Theatre invites the campus community to an illuminating discussion about the challenges of writing for and producing theatre, with accomplished industry veterans Stephen Metcalfe (Strange Snow, The Tragedy of the Commons, Jacknife, Cousins, Turn), Mike Myers (Ruskin Group Theatre), and Kelly Miller (South Coast Rep). The talk will also deal with the influence and intersection of theatre and film.

*         Stephen Metcalfe is a playwright, screenwriter and director who has created numerous dramatic works for film, television and stage. His writing credits include Jacknife, based on his play Strange Snow and starring Robert DeNiro and Cathy Bates, and Cousins, directed by Joel Schumacher for Paramount Pictures.

*         Mike Myers is the Managing Director of the Ruskin Group Theatre and current chair of the Arts Council in Santa Monica, CA,

*         Kelly Miller is the Literary Manager of South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa, CA.

Hosted by Prof. Robin Russin, along with Profs. Rickerby Hinds, Charles Evered, and Department Chair Stu Krieger.
