*                  Poet Laureate Al Young on “The Jazz Idiom”***

*Glen Avon Library* invites the public to  a special reading, discussion,
and book signing by California Poet Laureate *Al Young* on Friday evening,
April 17, at 6:30 p.m. (9244 Galena St., Riverside, 92509).   A
standing-room-only success when he appeared at the library last year, Young
is back in town to present his new book, *The Jazz Idiom:  Jazz Photography
of Charles L. Robinson with Poetic Takes and Riffs by Al Young*.





Glen Avon Regional Library manager *Tracie Carignan* says, “We are so happy
to have Al Young back here again.  Our community really admires him.  It
will be great to have another chance for people to meet him first hand.”





Young’s new book, *The Jazz Idiom*, is built around his friend Charles L.
Robinson’s photographs of famous jazz musicians – on stage as well as behind
the scenes. Charles Mingus, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rushing,
Milt Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie, Carmen McRae, and many others appear in
candid views.  Al Young’s comments riff, scat, and bebop along with his
poetry, anecdotes, and insight into the players and moments pictured.  The
book celebrates one of the most exciting times in American music history.



Charles L. Robinson was the staff photographer of the Monterey Jazz Festival
for years.

Al Young is the author of more than twenty books of poetry, fiction, and
nonfiction and has taught writing and literature at Stanford University, UC
Santa Cruz, and the University of Michigan. The recipient of Guggenheim,
NEA, and Fulbright fellowships, he lives in Berkeley and held the post of
Poet Laureate of California from 2005 - 2008.



Books and CDs will be available for purchase at the event.
