A couple of other fun details on that front:
When he was a community organizer in his mid-twenties (before law school),

and
was apparently on "the brink of" <http://www.newsweek.com/id/157424> trying
to make it as a fiction writer.

He still seems to see himself partly through the lens of writing.  This past
May, analyzing his own debate performances, he

"there's a certain ambivalence in my character that I like about myself.
It's part of what makes me a good writer, you know? It's not necessarily
useful in a presidential campaign."
