Hi all,

Below is a call for published manuscripts for award consideration in the Best of The West anthology. Just as an FYI: I contacted the editor and anthology publications and online publications also are being accepted for consideration, in addition to journals and magazines

---------------------------

My name is Seth Horton and I am co-editor, along with James Thomas, of the short story anthology series entitled, Best of the West: Stories from the Wide Side of the Missouri. As you may remember, this series released five annual volumes between 1988 and 1992. The first two were published by Peregrine Smith Books (Utah) and the final three by W. W. Norton. I am pleased to announce that the University of Texas Press will publish the next three volumes beginning in fall 2009.

To be eligible for inclusion in the next volume, a story must be published in a nationally distributed North American periodical between January and December 2008 and it must illuminate some aspect of life in the West. As our subtitle indicates, we are defining this region broadly. While we have read more than two hundred journals, there are no doubt other eligible stories that we have not yet found. We are therefore hoping that you’ll let us know if you, your friends, colleagues, or students have published a short story this year that takes place in the West. If you know of any such stories, please contact me at bestofthewesteditor at hotmail.com and include as much of the following information as possible:

Author’s name

Title of story

Journal information, including volume, issue, and date of publication

Page numbers

If you are submitting your own story for consideration, please consider sending a copy of it in Microsoft Word along with the publication information. This will mitigate the burden placed on our interlibrary loan system.

As you are the only person I’m contacting at your institution, please forward this message to anyone else in your program who might be interested. Also, if you would like to receive occasional updates about the series (I promise not to overwhelm you!), please send me your e-mail address and I will add you to our list.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

D. Seth Horton
