[Cwgrad-announcements] CCC petition

Hi all,

As I read that earlier petition Gaby mentioned
(below), it wasn't to change that MFAs must have an
English degree to teach comp. It repeated the issue
that MFAs don't qualify to teach comp at the CCC
unless their undergrad degree was in English. The
petition, as I understood it, was to make it so that
only people with MFAs in Creative Writing AND BAs in
English can teach Creative Writing classes. The MFA to
teach Creative Writing is great, but it doesn't
address the problem with non-English BA people
teaching comp.

The issue with MFAs not being able to teach comp at
community colleges unless they also have a BA in
English is nearly impossible to overcome short of
going back to get a different undergrad degree. I've
been hired and then fired at Mt. SAC and disinvited
from an interview at RCC because of this, despite
ongoing teaching experience at SBVC, even though
they're all California Community Colleges. Most
campuses won't consider the BA in Creative Writing
equivalent to the English BA requirement. This is
something that UCR undergrads as well as people in the
MFA with non-English backgrounds who are on a track to
persue an MFA should know about.

Love,
Elizabeth Aamot
