defining spaces

"Defining spaces" is a proactive interrogation that frames various
concepts. If space evokes emptiness, or a measured void, as silence
in a musical composition or a white blank in a poem, it also denotes
an interval that is free of any mark yet available for marking. It is
thus absence and plenitude. Or, when interpreted as a material
element, for example in "cinematic space," the term can refer to its
own site, the space of film which mobilizes parameters that require
specific analyses. When coupled with an adjective, such as "colonial,"
the word "space" becomes charged with connotations which may be
social, political, cultural, or gendered. So, whether these
defined spaces refer to what rhythms the textures within the work,
to what is inherent in its structures, or to what sets exterior
boundaries, these spaces invite re-defining.
