Randall Lewis Seminar Series - September 16, 2010

      Planning for Multi-Generational Family Housing
The American family’s household living arrangements are changing.

There has been a significant increase in multi-generational family households since 1980, largely the result of several demographic, cultural, and economic shifts. According to a March 2010 Pew Research Center study, about 16 percent or 49 million Americans live in a family household that contained at least two adult generations or a grandparent and at least one other generation. That compares to 28 million, or 12 percent of the population, living in a multigenerational household in 1980.

Demographic and economic changes – an older population, a higher number of immigrants, rising unemployment and higher costs for elder care and child care, are some of the reasons for the increase in multi-generational households.

What does this mean for home design and construction? What are some of the social implications of multi-generational housing?

A panel of experts will discuss the multi-generational housing issue at the September 16 Randall Lewis Seminar Series. The seminar will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room B, UCR Extension Building, 1200 University Ave., Riverside.

Panelists will be John Martin (far left), principal of John Martin & Associates, a Costa Mesa community planning, design and marketing firm; Randal Jackson (middle), Principal, Design, for The Planning Center, a full-service planning consulting firm also in Costa Mesa; and Kenneth S. Chew (right), Senior Lecturer and Vice Chairman of the Department of Planning, Policy and Design, UC Irvine.

The panel will discuss the many paths to multi-generational households, planning issues related to multi-generational housing, and the trend's implications to builders. John Martin's recent book, Hope, Vision & Value Creation, also will be available to attendees at a discounted price.
