Randall Lewis Seminar Series - September
16, 2010

Planning for Multi-Generational Family
Housing

The American family’s household living
arrangements are changing.

There has been a significant increase in
multi-generational family households since 1980, largely the result of
several demographic, cultural, and economic shifts. According to a March
2010 Pew Research Center study, about 16 percent or 49 million Americans
live in a family household that contained at least two adult generations
or a grandparent and at least one other generation. That compares to 28
million, or 12 percent of the population, living in a multigenerational
household in 1980.

Demographic and economic changes – an older
population, a higher number of immigrants, rising unemployment and higher
costs for elder care and child care, are some of the reasons for the
increase in multi-generational households.

What does this mean for home design and
construction? What are some of the social implications of
multi-generational housing?

A panel of experts will discuss the
multi-generational housing issue at the September 16 Randall Lewis Seminar
Series. The seminar will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room B, UCR
Extension Building, 1200 University Ave., Riverside.
<IMG hspace=4
