Creating Partnerships to Improve School Site Design
Providing safer routes to school while encouraging exercise and social skills was
the focus of a two-year research project recently completed in Riverside County’s
Coachella Valley.
Schools By Design was a collaborative project that brought together local school
district and government officials, county health specialists, parents, teachers, urban
planners and engineers to develop a model that could be used by other communities for
establishing safer routes to school.
A panel of participants in the Schools By Design project will provide an overview
and discuss its findings, recommendations and outcomes at the March 19 Randall Lewis
Seminar Series. The seminar will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room E, UCR
Extension Building, 1200 University Ave., Riverside. (See MAP)
The Schools By Design project was conducted by the Coachella Valley Association of
Governments and UCR’s Center for Sustainable Suburban Development, with funding provided
by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and additional collaboration
from the Riverside County Department of Public Health Injury Prevention Services.
The project gathered data on traffic around the region’s schools; surveyed student
and parent attitudes on walking or biking to school and related issues; and successfully
built relationships between local governments, school districts and public health to
identify how cities and school districts can work together to improve safety and promote
walking and biking to school.
Seminar presentations will be made by Jacob Alvarez, Management Analyst with the
Coachella Valley Association of Governments; Juliann Emmons Allison, Assistant Professor
of Political Science at UCR, CSSD Associate Director and the project’s Principal
Investigator; Lorraine Becker, Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Palm Springs
Unified School District; and Sandy Wales-Jackson, Program Coordinator with the Riverside
County Department of Public Health Injury Prevention Services.
