<H2 class=style13 align=center>Creating Partnerships to Improve School
Site Design </H2><IMG alt="Kids walking to school" hspace=5

<P><SPAN class=style9>Providing safer routes to school while encouraging
exercise and social skills was the focus of a two-year research project
recently completed in Riverside County’s Coachella Valley.</SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=style9><EM>Schools By Design</EM> was a collaborative
project that brought together local school district and government
officials, county health specialists, parents, teachers, urban planners
and engineers to develop a model that could be used by other communities
for establishing safer routes to school.</SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=style9>A panel of participants in the <EM>Schools By
Design</EM> project will provide an overview and discuss its findings,
recommendations and outcomes at the March 19 Randall Lewis Seminar Series.
The seminar will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room E, UCR
Extension Building, 1200 University Ave., Riverside. (See <A

<P><SPAN class=style9><IMG alt="School site photo" hspace=5

<EM>Schools By Design</EM> project was conducted by the Coachella Valley
Association of Governments and UCR’s Center for Sustainable Suburban
Development, with funding provided by the California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans) and additional collaboration from the Riverside
County Department of Public Health Injury Prevention Services.</SPAN></P>
<P align=left><SPAN class=style9>The project gathered data on traffic
around the region’s schools; surveyed student and parent attitudes on
walking or biking to school and related issues; and successfully built
relationships between local governments, school districts and public
health to identify how cities and school districts can work together to
improve safety and promote walking and biking to school.</SPAN></P>

<STRONG>Jacob Alvarez,</STRONG> Management Analyst with the Coachella
Valley Association of Governments; <STRONG>Juliann Emmons
Allison,</STRONG> Assistant Professor of Political Science at UCR, CSSD
Associate Director and the project’s Principal Investigator;
<STRONG>Lorraine Becker,</STRONG> Assistant Superintendent of Schools for
the Palm Springs Unified School District; and <STRONG>Sandy
Wales-Jackson</STRONG>, Program Coordinator with the Riverside County
Department of Public Health Injury Prevention
Services.</SPAN></P></DIV></TD>

<P class=style8 align=left><IMG height=169 alt="Randall Lewis" hspace=3
src="Images/RandallLewis.jpg" width=100 align=right vspace=2>Randall Lewis
is well known for his innovative approaches to planning, designing, and
marketing residential communities as Executive Vice President of the
Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies. </P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He has been Secretary of the Los Angeles County
Citizens Planning Council, Director of the Home Builder's Council,
National Director of the National Association of Home Builders, and
President of the Inland Empire Arts Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He was inducted into the California Building
Industry Association Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Sales and
Marketing Council's MAME Awards Marketing Person of the Year. He is a long
time ULI member as well as a Governor of the ULI Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He serves on several executive boards,
including the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and the UCLA
School of Public Policy and Social Research.He received his B.A. from
Claremont McKenna College. </P></TD>
