Dear Cairo...my dear Cario:
A performance by Zeena Pliska
*Saturday, June 3, 2:00 PM PDT*
*In person at Beyond Baroque & Live on Youtube*
[image: june3x]
*Dear Cairo…my dear Cairo* is a multi-media art exhibition combining
photos, videos, a soundscape of Cairo, Egyptian pop music, and the reading
of the children’s picture book Egyptian Lullaby, by Egyptian-American
artist/children’s book author *Zeena M. Pliska*. The presentation is being
held in conjunction with a photo exhibit of Cairo with the same title,
currently showing at the Los Angeles Public Library Venice branch (501 S.
Venice Blvd.) and at the independent bookstore Village Well Books and
Coffee (9900 Culver Blvd.), with different photos at each venue. It is the
hope of the artist/author that this installation, the photo exhibitions,
and Egyptian Lullaby will normalize Arab culture for those who are
unfamiliar and celebrate it with those who are to counter the demonization
and frequent negative portrayals in the media.

The Poem as an Object:
Constructing Poems through the Page
*Saturday, June 3, 11:00 AM PDT*
*In person at Beyond Baroque*
[image: june3w]
In this workshop we will explore the physicality of poetry by practicing
forms that challenge the presentation of poetry in traditional
2-dimensional print. As a group we’ll have the chance to read and discuss
examples from poets such as Douglas Kearney, Diana Khoi Nguyen, and Jubie
Arriola-Headly. After which we will go through a series of prompts to try
our own hand at forms that subvert the page. In spending this time
exploring the poem as a physical object we will practice writing tactics
that will help us enhance our craft and help to avoid any self-imposed
limitations we may subconsciously be harboring when it comes to creating
poetry.
*Kelsey Bryan-Zwick* is a multi-modal artist and writer, published across
many genres. Their debut collection of poetry, Here Go the Knives (Moon
Tide Press), part memoir, part magical realism, part illustration—focuses
on their decades surviving with debilitating scoliosis. Kelsey is The
Poetry Lab’s Assistant Director, a Los Angeles Poet Society organizer,
Chair of Produced Media for the Stonewall Democratic Club, and a staff
writer for Cultural Daily. Kelsey is a UC Santa Cruz alum (go banana
slugs!) and they’ve been thrice nominated for the Pushcart Prize and twice
for the Best of the Net. On the gram @theexquisitepoet.

Chancla Cartography:
A Prose Workshop with Carribean Fragoza
*Saturday, June 17, 11:00 AM PDT*
*In person at Beyond Baroque*
[image: june17w]
"Chancla Cartography” is a pedestrian approach to writing that finds rich
subject material in daily environments and interactions. This prose
workshop draws from elements of nonfiction and fiction to call upon
personal and collective narratives embedded in familiar landscapes such as
in a neighborhood or home. Participants will be encouraged to tap into the
complex knowledge contained in its places, objects and people.
*Carribean Fragoza* is a fiction writer and journalist from South El Monte,
CA. Her collection of stories Eat the Mouth That Feeds You was published in
2021 by City Lights and was a finalist for a 2022 PEN Award. Her co-edited
compilation of essays, East of East: The Making of Greater El Monte was
published by Rutgers University Press and her collection of essays Writing
Home: New Terrains of California is forthcoming with Angel City Press. She
has published in Harper's Bazaar, The New York Times, Zyzzyva, Alta, BOMB,
Huizache, KCET, the Los Angeles Review of Books, ArtNews, and Aperture
Magazine. She is the Prose Editor at Huizache Magazine and Creative
Nonfiction and Poetry Editor at Boom California, a journal of UC Press.
Fragoza is the founder and co-director of South El Monte Arts Posse, an
interdisciplinary arts collective. She lives in the San Gabriel Valley in
Greater Los Angeles.

Flash in Four MORE: A Creative Writing Experience
*Saturday, August 19, 12:00 AM PDT*
*In person at Beyond Baroque*
[image: aug19w]
Can you write a story in 1,000 words? How about in 100 words? Not sure?
Here's your chance to try! (Again, if you participated in the previous
experience.) During this four-hour, in-person, creative writing experience
for writers at all levels, you'll learn about flash fiction, flash
nonfiction, micro-fiction, and micro-memoir and have time to practice these
short forms not once, not twice, but four times! We will look at samples
from various online journals, review elements of scene and precise use of
language, play with verbs and point of view. We will practice cutting and
shaping ideas to fit the word count. There will be two opportunities to
share your work.
Chicana Feminist and former Rodeo Queen, *Tisha Marie
Reichle-Aguilera* (she/her)

the urban chaos of her adulthood. She is obsessed with food. A former high
school teacher, she earned an MFA at Antioch University Los Angeles and a
PhD in Creative Writing and Literature at the University of Southern
California. Her fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Best of
the Net, Best Microfiction, and is spotlighted in Best Small Fictions 2022.
Her short stories have been anthologized in Rural Writers of Color
(EastOver Press 2023), Made in L.A. Volume 4 and 5 (Resonant Earth 2022 and

was featured in Center Theater Group Writers’ Workshop Festival 2022 and
her young adult novel Breaking Pattern is forthcoming from Inlandia Books.

One Sings The Other Dances: An Exhibition by Renee Petropoulos and Benjamin
Weissman
*March 18 - August 5, 2023*
[image: rpbw]
We're excited to announce the extension of One Sings The Other Dances! The
exhibition is now running until May 27. *Benjamin Weissman*’s new drawings
are cognitive surges, hallucinations, spillages of imagination, an
unearthing of what’s in the head, kitchen sink dramas, image-novels, often
dealing with the porousness of human to animal. *Renee Petropoulos*’ works
are tributes, they are homages, they are imagined monuments to writers that
have changed her; changed her thinking; inspired her. The collages on view
reflect readers and writers that have visited Beyond Baroque over the last
decades.
