Dear Professor Lutz,


Hello, my name is Lee Foust and I teach at the Sant’Anna Institute in
Sorrento, Italy. I’m writing to you as your school annually sends students
to our study abroad program and I want to let you know that our institute
has a quality writing workshop and literature courses and to encourage you
to send us your creative writing and English majors. I want to make sure
that you know that, even though we’re situated in Italy, your students can
continue honing their English writing skills while studying abroad as well
as take an interesting in situ literature course—currently one on the
figure of the Neapolitan women from Susan Sontag’s Emma Hamilton to Elena
Ferrante’s brilliant friend. More advanced Italian students can also study
Italian literature in the original with our Prof. D. Polumbo



For young writers I believe the Sant’Anna Institute offers a wonderful
opportunity to benefit from several aspects of the study abroad experience.
With Naples only a short train ride away, both the best of European urban
culture as well as the gorgeous and tranquil setting of Sorrento is ideal
for cultural encounters as well as meditative work. For students of
literature and creative writing visiting sites described in Virgil’s
*Aeneid*, Petronius’ *Satyricon*, Italian novelists from Matilde Serao to
Elena Ferrante, as well as so many traveling writers, not to mention living
in the city that gave birth to Epic poet Torquato Tasso, can only inspire
them to read the works of the past as well as, hopefully, adding their own
voice to the chorus.



I’ll attach my two fall syllabi here for your perusal. As you can see, the
writing workshop is open to all levels (and to both poets and writers in
prose), but I know from experience that the mix of the beginner with the
more experienced writer is the ideal situation: the novice learns from and
is inspired by the pro, and the pro learns how to mentor and is refreshed
by the naïve and often more sincere feedback of the novice. The course is
quite flexible, leaving room for students to bring their own projects to
the workshop or allowing them to fall back on a series of writing exercises
if they feel that they need the discipline.
