Dear colleague—
Thank you for recommending your students to our doctoral programs here at
UC Irvine in past years. We write to let you know about an exciting program
that might be of interest to some of your current students considering
graduate school. The UCI School of Humanities Black Studies Cluster (BSC)
is an interdisciplinary humanities Ph.D. recruitment project for students
interested in Black Studies. A collaboration between the departments of
Comparative Literature, Culture & Theory, English, Film & Media Studies,
History, Spanish & Portuguese, and Visual Studies, and anchored by the
Critical Theory Emphasis, the BSC provides additional funding and resources
to support graduate students interested in Black thought, literature, and
media; histories of Black resistance movements and freedom struggle,
domestic and international; comparative histories of race and
racialization; and critical theories of anti-Blackness, colonialism, and
violence.
We have already welcomed two extraordinary cohorts of students, and are
thrilled to announce that we will be recruiting a third cohort of students
for matriculation in 2023-24. To be considered for the BSC, students need
only apply via the standard process to one of the affiliated programs.
Students interested in being considered for the BSC should mention their
interest in their statement of purpose or elsewhere on their application,
but this is not a requirement. Current BSC student profiles, and deadlines
and links to participating doctoral programs’ application pages can be
found at: https://www.humanities.uci.edu/graduate/black-studies-cluster

We hope that you will forward this information to any students you have who
might be interested in applying in 2022-23. If you have any questions about
the program, please feel free to email us at blackstudies at uci.edu. Students
can learn more about the individual programs in our cluster by contacting
the Director of Graduate Studies for each department.
Best,
Sora Han, BSC Co-Director and Chair of African American Studies
Annie McClanahan, BSC Co-Director and Associate Professor of English
