Subject: OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR STUDENTS: The MFA Program in Creative Writing
@ the University of Alabama

Good afternoon!

My name is PD Edgar, and I'm writing from the MFA Creative Writing Program
at the University of Alabama <https://cw.english.ua.edu>.

I hope this email finds you and your students well! As we begin to move
toward winter, I hope you'll share this information about our program with
any students who may be interested in applying
<https://cw.english.ua.edu/mfa-admissions/> into an MFA in Creative
Writing, be it in Poetry, Fiction, or Creative Nonfiction.

The University of Alabama MFA is a unique program that values providing
students with opportunities to write widely (Students write traditionally
as well as in the veins of speculative/science fiction and
digital/multimedia poetry) and build professional experience. We provide
students with a* fully-funded assistantship for **up to **four years* of
coursework at the main campus in historic
<https://bfsa.ua.edu/hallowed-grounds-tours.html> Tuscaloosa, Alabama
<https://www.ua.edu/tuscaloosa>. Furthermore, the flexibility of our
program often allows students to pursue a dual degree, as many have in book
arts <https://slis.ua.edu/mfa-in-book-arts/>, TESOL
<https://linguistics.english.ua.edu>, journalism
<https://jcm.ua.edu/graduate/>, and gender and race studies
<https://grs.as.ua.edu>, to name a few.

Not only will students learn from a variety of colleagues from across
America and around the World, but they'll do so with the opportunity to
build out their teaching, editing, administrative, and community service
portfolio. The assistantship that UA's MFA allows for students to teach up
to intermediate-level creative writing classes, to lead the nation's oldest
continuously-run graduate literary magazine *Black Warrior Review
<http://bwr.ua.edu>*, to participate in a variety of institutional
administrative roles, and to serve incarcerated writers as an instructor in
the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project
<https://cw.english.ua.edu/alabama-prison-arts/>.

It's the mission of our program not just to encourage the growth of
thoughtfulness and artistic sensibility, but to deepen a writer's practice
so that it is lifelong. In the words of some of our veteran professors, "If
you're still writing 10 years after you graduate from this program, we've
done our job well." That said, graduates from Alabama's MFA have recently
won Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships
<https://www.diamondforde.com>, Whiting Awards and NEA Fellowships
<https://www.krcandrilli.com>, and other awards
<https://cw.english.ua.edu/alumni-publications/>.

As the Assistant to the Director of the MFA Program, I'm available to
communicate personally with students who may have any questions about our
program, and I hope you'll encourage them to reach out and apply
<https://cw.english.ua.edu/mfa-admissions/>!

Thank you so much for your time,

P.D. Edgar
