Poets and Writers,
The Summer 2023 Juniper Institute is just 6 months away! Did you know that
the Juniper Institute offers an independent writing residency option for
those who are not looking for a collaborative workshop experience? The
independent
writing residency <https://t.e2ma.net/click/yi9blh/iyeaak/ujjhrv> is open
to 6 writers, and it includes craft sessions, readings and Q&As, but
replaces the afternoon workshop time with self-directed writing time.
If you haven’t already, we recommend visiting our website to check out all
of the sublime Workshops <https://t.e2ma.net/click/yi9blh/iyeaak/ackhrv>
and Craft Sessions <https://t.e2ma.net/click/yi9blh/iyeaak/q4khrv> coming
this summer from writers like Diana Khoi Nguyen and Jeff Parker.
Diana Khoi Nguyen <https://t.e2ma.net/click/yi9blh/iyeaak/6wlhrv>’s
generative craft session, The Prose Poem, Lyrical Prose, and the Intimacy
of a Sentence, will pay close attention to what happens when lyric is
embroidered in a block of prose and how this transforms the nature of
syntax, of the sentence at an elemental level. In Nguyen’s hands on poetry
workshop, Listening to Images, participants will identify several
photographs or documents of their own choosing to work with and “listen”
to. The goal will be to pay attention to materials that impact us, to tap
into what is left unsaid. What happens when text embodies the visual
modality to produce a lyrical experience?
Jeff Parker <https://t.e2ma.net/click/yi9blh/iyeaak/mpmhrv>’s craft
session, Exercises in Style, will explore the relationship between story
and style by looking at some excerpts from Raymond Queneau’s classic Exercises
in Style. Participants of this craft session will bring a one page scene of
their own and will spend time rewriting their work in a different aesthetic
register. Jeff Parker describes his Fiction Workshop as “a literary
woodshed.” We are all in the business of carving wooden ducks, and we have
tools and techniques with which we can carve those wooden ducks. This
workshop will focus on fundamental elements of the craft, disabuse
participants of notions of right or wrong, and seek to make our works the
wooden ducks we wish them to be.
We are incredibly excited to hear from both writers at an evening reading
followed by a Q&A.
