Subject: Join the discussion on campus policing

In the wake of nationwide protests against racism and police brutality, colleges and universities are taking a hard look at their own policing practices. University of California student activists are calling for UC campuses to abolish or reshape their in-house police departments, and the Peralta Community College District recently voted to end its contract with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

The CalMatters College Journalism Network and KQED are hosting a discussion with students and administrators about how we rethink the role of police on campuses.

The Future of Campus Policing

Wednesday, April 21, 2021 6:00 PM

REGISTER FOR THE EVENT<https://calmatters.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5f4af3af825368013c58e4547&id=741db1813d&e=32b87633df>

Do colleges need their own police forces? If so, what changes are needed so that departments are responsive to the community, and students of color feel safe on campus? If not, what might replace them?

Panelists:

  * Ja'Corey Bowens, ethnic studies representative, Associated Students of San Francisco State University
  * Joseph Farrow, chief of police, UC Davis
  * Kimberly King, psychology professor, Laney College
  * John Pérez, chair, University of California Board of Regents
  * Naomi Waters, Racial Justice Now vice-chair, UC Student Association
We hope you can join us for this discussion on the future of campus safety.

Best,

Felicia Mello
College Journalism Network Editor, CalMatters
