[Chall_20-21] Bridging Conexiones - Law Panel

In partnership, Chicano Latino Alumni, Chicano Student Programs, and Raza Assembly have created Bridging Conexiones, a mentorship program with student leaders. This is a yearlong program designed to provide professional, leadership, and career development opportunities with a cultural lens for UCR Chicano/Latino identified student organizations. Our next event will be in collaboration with Lawtinx featuring a panel of UCR Alumni professionals in the legal field. This is open to all UCR students.

Panelists:
Rina Gonzales is a civil transactional attorney and creative business owner located in the Central Valley. Currently, Ms. Gonzales serves as the Deputy City Attorney for Fresno, CA.
Ms. Gonzales earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law and graduated with honors from the University of California, Riverside with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Ethnic Studies.
Penelope Quintero
Ms. Quintero has several years of experience in creditor’s rights (foreclosures, title curative, and replevin) representing national and international creditors. This experience includes trial experience as well as work qualifying and disqualifying experts of document authentication.
Originally from Fontana, California (Southern California), Ms. Quintero spent her years prior to moving to New Mexico living in the LA/Long Beach area, which put her in the heart of the filming industry. While in law school in Los Angeles, she concentrated her studies in corporate law and fell in love with transactional work as well as the entertainment industry around her. She also participated in the employment rights clinic where she investigated retaliation claims on behalf of the state commissioner. She also worked behind the scenes of small filming projects throughout the years. Ms. Quintero saw an intersection of all of these sectors and knew she wanted to practice law in a way that could blend her interests.
Javier Amaya
Criminal Defense Trial Attorney
Javier Amaya was born in Bogota, Colombia. Javier moved to Los Angeles when he was 14 years old and graduated from Glendale High School in 2007. Javier attended UCR and graduated with a BA in Anthropology and Psychology. While at UCR Javier was involved with several student organizations including ASUCR, PODER, UER, and Nuestra Cosa, Javier attended the University of New Mexico School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree with a certificate in Indian Law. While at UNM Law Javier was an editor of the Tribal Law Journal, board member of the American Constitution Society and member of the Mexican American Law Student Association. Javier also had the honor to clerk for a semester for the Honorable Justice Edward L. Chavez in the New Mexico Supreme Court. Javier currently works at the Law Officers of the Public Defender in Albuquerque NM as a Trial Attorney. Javier has been at the Law Offices of the Public Defenders for four years and has tried many criminal cases and is his current primary duty involves training new attorneys.
Alfonso Maldonado
UCR Immigration Attorney
Alfonso graduated from UCR in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy Law and Society and graduated from Western State College of Law in 2017. During law school, Alfonso successfully argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2017. He then went on to represent asylum seekers, including unaccompanied minors, in removal proceedings. As a former DACA recipient, he is driven to provide the immigrant community with access to adequate legal representation.
