Dear CEPCEB Members,
We are soliciting nominations for the Center for Plant Cell Biology (CEPCEB) 20th Annual Awards Celebration that will take place on Friday, December 9, 2022. The ceremony will take place in the late afternoon of our full-day Celebration. Three prestigious awards will be given.
* 2022 CEPCEB Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow Research Award
* 2022 Bailey Farms Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award
* 2022 Neil Campbell Outstanding Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The CEPCEB awards have a monetary value, and awardees' names are posted on the website. Don’t miss this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of your deserving lab members and faculty or non-faculty member of our community.
Nominations for your outstanding group members are due by midnight, Friday, December 2nd.
Nomination Procedures:
The Outstanding Postdoc Researcher and Graduate Student Researcher awards seek to recognize a UCR postdoctoral fellow and graduate student who has achieved research excellence, as demonstrated by publication of an impactful paper in the past two years. These papers are to be within the broad mission of CEPCEB, bridging from basic scientific discovery to impact. Manuscripts that are in the press are also acceptable if a letter of acceptance is included with the manuscript, in the nomination package. The departmental or degree program affiliation of the awardee is not relevant. However, the nominee needs to have been mentored by a CEPCEB faculty member. If you have multiple candidates for one award from your lab, it is fine to submit multiple nominations.
Our Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award is supported by an endowment established by Bailey Farms, a group of individuals passionate about education and advancements in plant sciences.
Due to the breadth of CEPCEB research interests, the letters of nomination should address: (1) importance of these scientific findings to the field, (2) specific role of the student/postdoc in the research (this is particularly important in multi-author papers), (3) prominence of the journal/proceedings that the work is published in, and (4) any other information that might guide the award committee’s decision-making process.
The Neil Campbell CEPCEB Outstanding Undergraduate Research Fellowship (started as an annual Award in 2005) honors UCR undergraduates mentored by CEPCEB faculty. The criteria for this award are not as stringent as those for the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Awards: creativity, diligence, focus, enthusiasm, and tangible research accomplishments are primary considerations for this award. The letter of nomination for this award should address: (1) the importance of these scientific findings to the field, (2) the specific role of the undergraduate in the research project (this is particularly important since most undergrads are mentored by a graduate student, postdoc or staff member), (3) independence of the student, and (4) any other information that might guide the award committee's decision-making process. If the student has been an author on a manuscript, the manuscript should be submitted; however, authorship on a manuscript is not mandatory for this award. Note: the awardee cannot have graduated, as they need to be able to receive financial aid for at least one quarter.
Due to the wonderful generosity of the Campbell family, the Campbell Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award has been converted from a small monetary award to a significant Fellowship. These funds will be distributed through as Financial Aid. Therefore, the awardee must be a current UCR undergraduate student with at least one quarter remaining before graduation.
To qualify, nominations must be submitted by December 2, 2022, via this link<https://forms.gle/VtA6xhuGJakLGg7i7>: https://forms.gle/VtA6xhuGJakLGg7i7 and please direct general questions to CEPCEB Director Julia Bailey-Serres.

Awardees are expected to be present during the ceremony on Friday, December 9th. If the postdoc or grad student is no longer a group member, we may ask the PI to arrange to have them appear to accept their award via Zoom.

Best wishes,

Julia Bailey-Serres
